In the context of senior police-officerdom, it's insufficient to be squeaky clean, they have to be seen as squeaky clean by the general public (that's us, mostly).

Of course, this only applies when and if the general public happen to be looking. Otherwise it doesn't seem to matter if they're as bent as a chain-link fence.

Wouldn't simply being up-to-date with their Lodge dues be sufficient?

I don't suppose any of them will fail a criminal records check - surely somebody will have deleted any relevant data.

Like the chap who got one day for pinching two Burberry t shirts?

A wee wifie elsewhere got four months for finding a pair of weans pants.

If the English court system is busy at the moment, just wait till some of these sentences hit the Appeal Courts.

That's before we take into consideration the cost of housing the case, providing legal aid solicitors and barristers, the cost of taking police officers off other duties to give evidence, overtime for CPS staff and so on.

All so Theresa May can walk about swaggering her shoulder-pads for a few days.

From the Govt e-petitions site.

Send rioters to the Outer Hebrides for 5 years

"All rioters and looters from the recent troubles in English cities should be banished to the Outer Hebrides for 5 years. This would be much, much, cheaper than keeping them in expensive prisons, saving the taxpayer money. Five years of being forced to live in the Outer Hebrides with none of the comforts of English city living e.g. running water, electricity, decent food, culture and shopping, will put them on the straight and narrow, and frighten them not to riot or loot again. Many local people there look after sheep part-time, so they can earn a small amount of extra money looking after rioters and looters as well."

I'm led to believe additional punishments will include compulsory Gaelic lessons and, of course, sheep-shaggin'.

She was nearly in line for a compulsory carbolic shower and a cavity search.

"Theresa May has been accused of “unacceptable and regrettable behaviour” by a judge as she became only the second Home Secretary in history to be found guilty of contempt of court."
