How lucky is that?

Sit down. Turn the telly on. BBC4. John Martyn.
Catskinner

Not very lucky unless you actually like John Martyn.

Was it the Whistle test clip with the Copicat (or possibly a Roland Space echo or a Binson Echorec)?

I always thought he was a mediocre composer of bland pop who mumbled incoherently.

I could never fathom the reverence in which he was held.

I still can't fathom some people's enthusiasm for gadget porn.

Nonetheless, he spoke very highly of you, in his more mumbling, incoherent moments Smilie_PDT

Gadget porn is good.

If you know what the gadget's doing you can get a better idea if the person using it is doing anything clever, or if the gadget's doing the work.

For instance if you set up an echo unit to play back at the right interval and the right number of repeats for the piece of music you're working with, you can build a solid rhythm which lets you lay stuff down on top as you play.

If your guitar's tuned to an open chord you don't need to have a string fretted to make it sound musical so you can flash your hand up and down the neck hitting individual notes while the open chord's playing and feeding them into the echo back drop without any real effort. It looks and sounds terribly impressive but it's not difficult. (If that description's not clear, fuck it it's late. Next time I see you and I've a guitar and a delay unit I'll show you.)

As someone who uses many electronic devices to make music I obviously don't think there's anything wrong with doing the above, but the fact that I can see through the magic gives me a rather jaundiced view when it comes to the adulation bit.

That's the thing. Sometimes I can't tell the difference.

I recall a conversation in Morrison's where I (jokingly I thought) suggested that, with all the electrickery available, there's no need to ensure a guitar is in tune because the box at the player's feet could sort out any imperfections before the note reached the listen's ears - much the way some 'looks over talent' performers are accused of having their voices re-tuned by the circuit boards.

As I recall Raddy suggested this (the guitar thing) is already possible - although with hindsight we may have been talking about slightly different things.

You're right, Onny, the Line 6 Variax guitars have an in-built tuning system. For instance: if you're playing a tune/ song and it goes out of tune - just press a button on the side of the guitar and it's perfect-pitch again. The Variax guitars can also go into open G, DADGAD, and other tunings, too.
