Lossiemouth Folk Festival 17th -19th July 2009

Looks like a kinda quiet, low key event.

I confess I posted my comment before I knew you would be attending Smilie_PDT

Even although there's only one venue and no booked guests, it's a very busy weekend with most of the usual "Travelling Folkies" in attendance. There's lots of space for camping out the back.

There can easily be two or three different sessions on the go as well as the free concert. The latter attracts various musicians and singers from established artists to novices, good and not so good. John W and Kris K do the sound.

If the weather is good, there's plenty of scope for addditional sessions and activities outside. However, this year was a little wet at times which caused the bar area to be be a bit crowded and noisy at times. This could happen anywhere, of course.

I went up on Sunday - arrived at 1pm, by 3pm absolutely nothing was happening, apart from a Punch and Judy show. I left.

Didn't you spot East Coaster?

Naw! Saw him at Stonehaven though!! Seems from his absence here and elsewhere, that he's only just got back.

Everything stops for the Punch and Judy show!

However, it doesn't last long and there were "singy" sessions in that very room immediately afterwards plus a concert(Open Mike affair) at night.

Also, there were plenty of other sessions later that afternoon within the public bar(mainly tunes), also in the outside seated area and a big bluegrass/old time session out the back.

I'm surprised you gave up so easily after travelling such a distance....

Well... After the P&J show, I sat for twenty minutes+, having been there for more than an hour and a half. Some people had come in during the P&J show with instruments, (encouraging) but disappeared as soon as it finished. (discouraging)

So, to repeat, after the P&J show, I sat there for ages, with NOTHING happening. I had been through in the bar - as you say mostly tunes, not to mention the fact that most of the seats and tables were occupied. Again, although there were quite a few instruments on view earlier on, nothing seemed to be taking place when I was there. Outside there were two women with fiddles and a guitarist - neither of them playing anything coherent, while a sax player "doodled" in the distance.

After two wasted hours I was pissed off and left. Yes, I could have put myself down for a spot at night, but since I wasn't staying until nightime it wasn't a "goer."

Maybe it was just the wrong time and place.

Ach well, maybe you'll not believe me but it did get busier later on  compress

Apparently, the session out the back was excellent although I didn't manage to get there... I saw it out the window. Of course, being unfamiliar with the venue, you could easily be unaware it was happening.

I do know that there was a singing session in the P & J room but it probably would have been after 3pm and there were a lot more musicians in the seating area outside the main door too.

I'll be the first to admit there's been better years though and the pub has been altered to such an extent that it's not as conducive to sessions as it used to be. There used to be a wall diving the the bar and lounge area but now it's just one big bar. Also, they had large "comfortable" chairs which weren't too handy. We moved them on Saturday but by Sunday they had returned. Smilie_PDT

Overall, I had a good time though but I was there for the duration  ie Thursday onwards. It was very lively if exceptionally busy on Saturday and, of course, the weather didn't really help.
