Stanley Robertson - R.I.P.

I just heard that Stanley Roberton passed away of a heart attack last night. (Sunday) A great loss to traditional singing, traveller lore, and story telling. Stanley always had time to have a crack - a generous and helpful man always - and very encouraging to me when I first started in the folk scene. Danny Coupar described him as a "National Treasure" and I think that's as good a description as any.

Another link in a very long chain gone,

I didn't know Stanley well, but he was always a pleasure to be around when we were on the same bill.

When I was MCing I knew I wouldn't have to go and find him, because he would be in the room listening to the other artists, and adjusting his set to reflect on what had gone before.

When my lassies were wee one of Stanley's tapes was a constant fixture in the car.

His books were damn good tae.
