The remains of James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell and third husband of Mary, Queen of Scots, have since lain in the crypt of Frevejle church, 60 miles from Copenhagen.

He had fled to Denmark in the hope of raising an army to put his wife back on the throne after she was forced to abdicate, but he was captured and never released.

Now a long-running campaign for Bothwell’s repatriation to Scotland, spearheaded by his only direct descendant Sir Alastair Buchan-Hepburn, has received new impetus – support from SNP MSP Jamie Hepburn."
