Teuchter language plans go tits-up.

The dinosaurs who were paid loadsa money to save Gaelic from extinction have admitted fucking up big style.

Two years ago Brd na Gidhlig (BnG), a bunch of money burners, committed (indeed they should be) itself to 1600 adult learners completing a new Gaelic course by the end of next month.

It now admits they blew it. It husnae a scooby what the final figure will be, but The Herald has established that in the Teuchterland area, where around 200 people were following the course, only about a dozen have completed it.

Although it has achieved its goal of 2000 adults taking up the Ulpan method of Gaelic learning, a spokesman for BnG confirmed it would miss the target it set for March 31, despite giving out funding of 250,000 for courses to be developed in this financial year alone.

I suspect MAK is a bit upset at the moment facing, as she does, the end of her BBC Radio Scotland Global Gathering programme.

I wonder if that's due, at least in part, to falling audience figures. Perhaps that, in turn, is due to the fact a number of listeners can no longer pick up her programme on Freeview as a result of the BBC ALBA bandwidth 'stealing' the space previously occupied by BBC radio evening programmes.

The law of unintended consequences, perhaps?

The usual response from BBC Alba supporters is that we should listen to the radio instead or purchase one.

That's all very well. As I argued before, not everyone has digital quality or even good FM tuners and having these stations on TV was a great advantage for them.

Also, I was away for a fortnight over Xmas and New Year and was unable to listen to the radio in my hotel room as the TV doubled up for both. I'm sur ethis will be quite a problem for holiday makers, business men and others on the move.

Quote:
A COMPANY paid hundreds of thousands of pounds of public money to help people speak Gaelic has been accused of harassing its staff.

Staff are also alleged to have had their personal emails hacked, although it is not clear who was responsible.

The company involved is Deiseal Ltd, which has received 700,000 in the last four years to deliver adult learners' courses in Gaelic. It specialises in the Ulpan method which is also used to teach Welsh and has a reputation as a quick and effective way for adults to become fluent in a language. About 2000 people are currently using it to learn Gaelic.
